Event description

Description

Frank Martin's Mass for Double Choir was premiered in 1963, nearly forty years after its completion. When questioned as to why the work had been hidden for so long, Martin explained that he "considered it a matter between God and myself"; that "a personal expression of religious belief should remain secret and hidden from public opinion". Led by conductor Roland Peelman, Luminescence Chamber Singers and the Consort of Melbourne join forces to bring Martin's extraordinary work to life, alongside the world premieres of four newly commissioned works by Elliott Gyger, Anastasia Pahos, Kim Cunio and Brad Gill. Each work responds to Martin's deeply personal mass and draws on a diverse range of spiritual and cultural traditions and texts.
