The Frame Australia Webinars are a series of monthly CPD-accredited presentations featuring innovative timber and mass wood projects.
About this event
The focus is on ‘real life’ design and construction challenges, and the solutions devised to meet the project objectives.
Learnings from practical experience will cover the entire design and build process. The Webinars will feature presentations by developers, architects, engineers, builders, and key providers of timber and engineered wood.
Attendees will learn from the successes (and challenges) of the pioneers in timber construction. A wide range of projects including residential, commercial, office, university, and community building construction will be featured in the series.
Speaker session format will be individual presentations by project primary participants followed by Q&A and open discussion with delegates.
Each event is CPD ACCREDITED NATIONALLY FOR 1.5 POINTS the Australian Institute of Building (AIB) – plus AIB members qualify for a 20% DISCOUNT on the attendance price.
FEBRUARY WEBINAR PROJECT
MARRICKVILLE LIBRARY, SYDNEY
Timber and engineered wood were used to create a warm and welcoming environment in Sydney’s Marrickville Library, the overall winner at the Australian Timber Design 2020 Awards, winner of Australian Institute of Architects 2020 prestigious David Oppenheim Award for Sustainable Architecture, and joint winner of the Sir Zelman Cowen Award for Public Architecture.
Architects BVN created a beautifully crafted project that not only delivers an inviting and functional community resource, but also showcases the versatility and sustainability of timber and engineered wood products.
The use of timber also references the history of the site, which was once used to source timber for construction. It was important to the community that their library was ‘kind to the planet’. As a result, timber was also used for its sustainable properties, comprising either recycled or certified timber coming from sustainable sources.
Timber products used in the Library included Glulam columns, mullions and transoms, plywood, blackbutt acoustic baffling, Tasmanian oak acoustic panel ceilings, batten balustrading and screens.
The technological and logistic skills were crucial in the supply and erection of the 54 tall cylindrical columns with pre-assembled metal components, and with a core of steel and a wrapping in Glulam. These significant components were prefabricated by Rubner Holzbau in Italy and shipped to Sydney ready for erection.
The large amount of timber used in columns, facade, screening, internal walls, window/door frames, tiered seating, joinery, ceilings and furniture also contributed to Marrickville Library’s environmental credentials.
