Foundational Skills and Knowledge for Education and Care practitioners

So what does being an education and care professional require?

An educators role is hard work and there are no quick fixes or short cuts but with the right information and support you can find the balance, thrive and grow to be a confident, capable education and care professional.

The role is complex and requires you to be present, diligent, vigilant, motivated, caring, considerate, empathetic, patient, flexible, responsive, socially and culturally aware, knowledgeable, articulate, a skilled negotiator, qualified and highly skilled pedagogical practitioner. Are you feeling overwhelmed yet?

While most education and care practitioners possess many of these personal and professional, attributes and values, desired by the education and care profession. These caring qualities alone are not enough for you to meet the high demands of the role.

To be able to fulfil your role as an educator you need :

- to know yourself as an EC practitioner in order to be a reflective practitioner

- to understand the importance of relationships with children, families, colleagues and community

- an understanding of the NQF in relation to your day to day work

- an understanding of child development and child development theory and

- to understand how development and theory applies to your practices, programs and planning for

children's ongoing learning and development

- to continue to learn and grow as a professional

The skills and knowledge needed to deliver quality early learning programs are not achieved in a day, a year or through a qualification alone. The skills, knowledge and practice wisdom needed to deliver high quality early learning programs take many years to acquire and even many more to master. As we all grow and learn we continue to discover more and more about the importance of the early years and the significance of having highly skilled and qualified practitioners to provide rich and nurturing learning environment's for children.

The Workshop

This interactive and engaging workshop is going to provide you with the fundamental pieces of information you require to enable you to put this complex puzzle together and make the necessary connections between theory, child development, regulations, NQS, your practices, program and the frameworks.

You will reflect on yourself as a practitioner and professional and be encouraged to critically reflect on the way in which you go about your work. You will explore ways to work smarter and not harder by identifying and prioritising the work.

At the end of the workshop you will have a clearer understanding of your role and the key pieces of information and practices you need to know and undertake to be able to do your job with a confidence and hopefully you feel better prepared even motivated to tackle the year ahead.

Learning outcomes:

  • You will learn about the foundational need to build strong secure relationships with children and others and the significance of relationships to learning and development.

  • You will explore and be supported to make connections between regulations, NQS, child development, theory and theorists, your practices, programs and frameworks.
