Event description

Description

This workshop will develop clinician’s understanding and practice for working effectively with people with borderline personality disorder (BPD). It will include a developmental understanding of factors contributing to a diagnosis of BPD, the ongoing effects of early life experiences and complex childhood trauma, and the role of therapeutic relationships in treatment. The workshop will also focus on the assessment of, and working with, chronic and acute risk, as well as principles for treatment and treatment planning.

Facilitators: Peter Smith & Tania Wittleton

Peter Smith is a social worker with many years’ experience in a variety of contexts including: rights and advocacy, policy and governance for a student unionand housing and accommodation for homeless people with mental health concerns. More recently he’s worked in public area mental health outpatient clinics in a variety of roles as a case manager, in outreach support for homeless people and in crisis assessment and intervention, including with PACER. He currently works for Spectrum.

Tania Wittleton is an Occupational Therapist who, for twenty years, has worked with clients experiencing mental health issues across the lifespan and in numerous public health settings throughout Australia: from inpatient psychiatry units, to Prevention and Recovery Care Services, community case management and crisis work, alongside conducting project work with FaPMI and indigenous mental health. Tania currently works at Spectrum in their Dialectical Behaviour Clinic, for those with a Borderline Personality Disorder diagnosis and has co-developed the service’s Acceptance and Commitment Therapy program pilot. Sensory modulation as a therapeutic intervention is a key area of her practice expertise and Tania’s work ethos is foregrounded in empowering clients to experience their functional best and maximum quality of life.
