Forum Commemorating the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody
Thu. 16 February 2017, 12:00 pm – 3:30 pm AEDT
25th Anniversary of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody Commemorative Forum
A joint event by the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body and ACT Council of Social Service
You are invited to join ATSIEB and ACTCOSS as we commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (RCIADIC).
The forum will take a big picture view of where the RCIADIC sits within the contemporary context of justice and corrections in the ACT, and the soaring incarceration rates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Hear from an eminent panel of speakers including Professor Mick Dodson (Director, ANU National Centre for Indigenous Studies & Professor of Law, ANU College of Law), Ms Louise Taylor (Deputy CEO, Legal Aid ACT) and Ms Sharon Payne (Expert consultant on Aboriginal justice and community safety) as they discuss the implications of the RCIADIC recommendations, including where they have or have not been adopted.
The remainder of the forum will be interactive, with small group discussions. The aim of these small groups will be to discuss which RCIADIC recommendations people feel are most important in addressing the current issues in the justice system for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This forum discussion will form the basis of a short paper to be presented to the ACT Government.
Food: Lunch and light refreshments will be provided from Bandu Catering
