Event description

Description

“Foraging for Useful Plants” is a daylong foraging adventure. The workshop runs from 9am until 4pm.

It is an in-depth look at plants and their many uses, how to identify and prepare them.

We begin by walking through gardens, then through pasture land and into the bush and back along the Tweed river. We will be out walking and talking for about 5 hours so make sure you bring water and a packed lunch. (The walking component is only about 2km…there is lots of stopping and learning along the way.)

You will receive take home plant-id sheets to help you forage at home.

On this journey you will discover dozens of wonderful plants for edible, medicinal and other uses. Plants for cordage, weaving and dying. Plants used for tinder, for making fire drills, as fish poisons and more.

From common garden and pasture weeds, introduced/ naturalised shrubs to Australian Native plants. We also learn about deadly/ harmful plants and the dangers of incorrect identification.

You will learn to identify and correctly prepare plant material. We also look at sustainable harvesting practise, how to collect plant material from native bushland without having an adverse effect on the environment.

During our walk, we will be harvesting plants to bring back to the homestead to prepare a delicious wild-harvest afternoon tea to enjoy while we end the day with an informal info sharing session and talk about great books and other resources to extend your knowledge about foraging.
