What is For the Crown?

Queen Sovende, last of her bloodline and sovereign of Wruicia, is dead. No sooner than her funereal procession has ended are the cogs of a once divided, diverse land coming to life.

The continental empire of Wruicia, consolidated over decades of both bloody and peaceful reign by the ruling dynasty, now sits on the brink of chaos and carnage.

Uncertainty lingers in the air for nobility and peasantry alike as the territorial walls that once stood high over the land begin to reappear, casting shadows of borders that once divided these lands. All the while, unchecked by any united front, agents of opportunistic foreign nations are cautiously prodding at the falling empire’s borders.

An era of change, perhaps one of turmoil and evolution, is dawning for the continent of Wruicia.

Ultimately, its fate rests in your hands.

For the Crown is a Megagame about politics, intrigue and war. It's set in a fictional 18th century realm called Wruicia. Players take on the roles of political and military leaders within a number of key factions across this world, ultimately guiding their people to prosperity or doom!

What's a Megagame?

Megagames are large, live action games played out with dozens (or possibly hundreds) of real life players. Our events tie together roleplaying, board gaming, strategy and political simulation.

On game day, players gather at a single location and, using the materials provided (rules, briefings, stationery, maps, cards, tokens, etc) play out the scenario on hand. The themes of past games have varied greatly - from futuristic political dramas to swashbuckling pirate adventures. For the Crown is a game of colonial-era politics, intrigue and war.

Other players, called Moderators, enforce the rules and present pre-planned scenarios to the players during the event.

The Sydney Megagamers have operated in Sydney since May 2014.

For the Crown is our sixth Megagame.

How do I play?

Once you have a ticket, you're in the game! There might be some decisions you and your teammates need to make prior to 5 October - if so, you'll receive emails from us.

For those who purchase solo tickets, you'll receive a survey once all 6 of those tickets have been purchased. This will help us align your interests with the special role you will play in the simulation.

In the two or three weeks prior to game day, you will receive another email - this will include a briefing that sets out your teams background and objectives in the game, as well as a link to the online rules compendium. The compendium is like a wiki or rulebook and has everything you need to know before game day.

On game day, you'll join the other 51 particpants at the venue (Rex Centre), with sign-in strating at 9:30am. We'll send more details about the venue closer to the event.

The game will kick off that morning and, for the following hours (6 to 8 - you never know how long a megagame will go!) you will be playing For the Crown!

This will involve diplomacy and negotation with the other teams, it will involve the use of cards and tokens as you careful ration out resources between your teammates, and it will see you play your role in crafting an epic narrative of politics, intrigue and conflict.

What do the different tickets mean?

Tickets are divided up by team (or faction). There are 14 teams to pick from.

Until registration ends, all tickets are equal. Individual roles of players on each team will be decided closer to the date, in consultation with the players.

To learn more about the factions, click here.

Why are tickets this price?

Sydney Megagamers in a non-profit community group of volunteers who design, test and facilitate Megagames.

All funds associated with ticketing to our events are used for venue hire, production costs (graphic design, printing, etc), event insurance and refreshments.

In addition, a percentage of ticketing prices go to Eventbrite as payment for the ticketing system.

Is the event catered?

For the Crown will not be catered. Light refreshments will be provided and players will have access to basic kitchen facilities (instant hot water, microwave, fridge).

Players are encouraged to bring along their own snacks and lunch for the day.

Do I have to dress up?

Megagames are not live-action roleplaying (LARP), nor are they cosplay.

Players are encouraged to dress up in attire that suits the theme (we've seen pirates, military generals and post-apocalyptic nurses in the past!), however it is not compulsory, nor is it required to enjoy the game.

If unsure, unprepared or simply uninterested in dressing to the role, we recommend you just come in something comfortable.

For those who are interested - let your imagination run wild! For the Crown is an 18th century fictional, though does not include any fantasy elements. For simple costumes or themes, think about your teams sigil/flag.
