Description

Sydney NOW presents FOR FOLK SAKE!
~ live original music ~
on the roof top at 107 Projects gallery space in Redfern

Come and join us inside (that's right, we have a lovely warm indoor space, which spills out onto the fairy lit community garden terrace) SATURDAY JULY 28 to be spellbound by three incredible songwriters.

DECLAN KELLY

Declan Kelly was born in Sydney, Australia to an Irish father and Maori mother. Having two strong ancestral ties made it no wonder that creativity and music was running through his blood.

Growing up in Sydney’s Balmain, live music was abundant and a thriving scene made this village alive. Here he met Alex Lloyd to form his first band The Beefs, which went on to play in bars underage and also win a number of band competitions as they had a uniqueness in playing rhythm and blues which was undeniable.

When Kelly finished school he joined The Bondi Cigars and immediately began touring rigorously, honing his craft as a musician and songwriting. He recorded one album with the BC's before parting ways to work on other projects and pen his own tunes.

Kelly's debut solo album 'Tales from the Neighbourhood' was born in 2005.

His second album Adrift, saw Declan’s songwriting mature to become deeply moving and personal. His production skills moved up a few gears to produce an authentic, quality album of well crafted songs. Two songs from the album, Far and Away and Hold the Light were featured in the BBC series Top of the Lake, directed by Jane Campion.

The latest production from Declan is a collaborative effort on an awareness and fundraising album called Diesel n' Dub, a collection of reggae and dub versions of Midnight Oil songs featuring a stellar cast including Katie Noonan, Alex Lloyd, Emma Donovan and Radical Son to name a few. Proceeds go to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation.

Declan continues to write and is in the process of pre-production of his next album.

BRENDAN WIXTED (THE MODEL SCHOOL)

Signalling a lo-fi yet uplifting return to pop music for The Model School, Brendan Wixted is back with a new album “Suburban Cinema”, due to be released August 2018. New tracks “Drive All Over This Town” and “Around The World” boast glistening synths & swooning guitars - but it’s the songs underneath that continue to evoke lost years, suburban lawns, video games that never load and everything that falls in between. With 3 albums in the rear-view, a 4th around the corner, and multiple other projects about to clear the exit ramp, 2018 should definitely be a banner year for The Model School.

“Sydney has soul after all” - NZ herald
“Nostalgic and surreal…great addictive songs” - alt media
“One of our finest songsmiths” - Melbourne Herald Sun
“The Model School has a genuine charm” - Craig Mathieson, The Age

CHRISTINE JANE

Christine Jane’s unique sound is described as ‘cinematic blues’. Infusing stories from her deeply layered book of memories with her love of cinema score, blues and folk, she walks the line between modern and romantic, traditional and rebellious. With a voice that evokes the aches of another world and soothes the most savage beasts, her performances are not to be missed. Come and be transported by the quirky darkness of her forthcoming album SONGS FOR BLEEDING HEARTS.
