An Aussie Summer Christmas Lunch with a Dutch touch

Growing up, Christmas was all about food - lots of it - and family – lots of that to!
Christmas lunch would start at around 1pm and go through until 5 or 6pm. There was so much food that a snooze on the couch or a game of backyard cricket was required as intermission between courses. Breakfast was avoided to leave plenty of room in the belly and no-one ever considered it necessary to even think about dinner...
This year at Wandering Trout Taphouse, we are doing it all in memory of departed family and those far away that we never get to see. From the horses’douvers to the 3-course dessert and the mountains of food in between. Everything will be house made and locally sourced, in true Wandering Trout style.
There will be the decks outside and the garden surrounds to roll around in a food stupor between courses. We’ll bring you your feast and you can order your drinks at the bar. Best of all, there’ll be no cleaning up for you to do!

Aperitif – a small plate of dainty treats featuring Southern Sky Cheese, local cured meats, the Trout’s own gravlax and other delights to whet the appetite. **We suggest a small G’n’T or Vodka Martini to really get the juices flowing, or maybe a glass of bubbles
Soup – we always had a cold soup to start so this year we are going with Gazpacho Verde. **A nice crisp Pinot Gris or zesty dry Riesling would go perfectly
Salt Water Plate – our next course was always seafood – oysters, prawns, marinated mussels & baby octopus served with a light salad, citrus & the Trout’s secret seafood sauce to die for! **Keep going on the whites or switch to a nice glass of Belczech Euro Pale around now
The Main Event – get ready for it! Honey Glazed Ham & succulent Roast Turkey served cold with plumb sauce, Roast Pork served hot with Crackle & Appelmoes (dutch apple sauce) accompanied by Huzarenslaatje (best potato salad in the world!), Garden Salad & Honey Glazed Veggies **Belczech or Secret Tarn Mole Creek Pale would suit this well
Desserts – never just one & the decision to make is which to start and end with to finish the meal perfectly – Oma's Apricot Vla, Ma’s Christmas Cake (soaked in enough brandy to sink a ship), Pavlova – because no Aussie Christmas is complete without it! **Bubbly is a must with this
Cheese – A three-piece selection of Southern Sky’s amazing cheeses served with both fresh and port poached fruits **Noble Reisling from the Coal Valley or a glass of some of the world’s best sticky wines from North East Victoria
