Event description

Description

Target:

Leadership, Wellbeing Coordinators, Primary and Secondary staff who work with EAL Learners

Aim of the Conference:

To build professional knowledge of best practice EAL research and strategies to empower EAL learners to become successful learners.

Key Learning Objectives:

The conference will enable participants to

  • Develop strategies to ‘slow down’ the content and explicitly teach the processes

  • Understand various factors that may affect the EAL learner’s progress

  • Develop an understanding of EAL learners’ experiences in the Victorian school system

Overview:

This conference presents a fantastic opportunity for teachers and members of leadership who work with EAL learners, to increase their knowledge of best practice EAL research and strategies.

The day begins with a panel of young recently arrived EAL young people sharing their experiences of Australian school life and pathways into further education and employment. Dr Jenny Miller (Senior Lecturer in Education at Monash University) will facilitate the session, with opportunity for audience involvement.

Participants will also be invited to select their preferences for morning and afternoon workshops. Workshop facilitators include:

She is the author of a number of books and articles on language education, including A New Grammar Companion for Teachers and Exploring How Texts Work.

Dr Sally Humphrey (Senior Lecturer in linguistics and literacy education at ACU in NSW. A TESOL teacher, teacher trainer and educational linguist)

Rob Vingerhoets (Experienced and engaging presenter of hands-on and engaging maths ideas and practices to support EAL students)
