About the course

The aims and intentions of this course are as follow:

- To educate clinicians on the fundamental importance of flexibility for human movement and performance

- To highlight the deficiencies of conventional range of movement assessment tools used and provide a more complete framework to determine an individuals flexibility capacity

- To introduce the connective tissue/fascial system in order to allow practitioners to have a more complete and clinical understanding of anatomy. This information helps explain the interconnectedness of different regions and the importance of not fixating on the symptomatic area.

- To discuss the misinformation surrounding stretching and how to effectively integrate it into rehabilitation and high performance programs

Although theory will be discussed to justify clinical guidelines, there will be a strong focus on practical demonstrations to allow participants to experience the effect of the movements and patterns discussed in addition to develop the competency to apply them clinically.

About the presenter Jack Williams

I currently work as a principal physiotherapist and strength and conditioning coach at Melbourne Athletic Development in Abbotsford. I also work in a teaching role at La Trobe University whilst dedicating much time to independent research.

After completing my physiotherapy studies, I commenced a three year yoga apprenticeship under the guidance of Duncan Ewing (Founder and Principle of Yoga Arts Academy). This provided me with an approach and method that has greatly influenced my clinical approach. In order to understand the neurophysiological mechanisms underpinning the clinical effects I was observing with applying yoga modalities, I completed my Masters in Exercise Science. This greatly enhanced my knowledge of the scientific foundations which is a primary element to the clinical framework I use.

This pathway has lead me to develop this course to share and educate health practitioners of the necessity of flexibility for treatment of musculoskeletal disorders and optimising health and performance.
