Join renowned American artist Kate Thompson for an inspiring workshop and discover the art of mixed media bookmaking in Canberra.

Workshop Details

We will create a fabric and paper book that evokes a vintage, timeworn aesthetic. This unique creation will feature an artful blend of antique linens and laces, vintage ledger papers and ephemera, botanical eco prints, watercolour papers, acrylics, earth pigments, pastels, charcoal, wire and tin, and other thoughtfully curated materials.


Techniques Covered

Using multilayered mixed media techniques to create a personal and expressive book such as collage, mark making, embroidery, image transfers, distressing lace and fabrics with plaster, make a faux antique tin type photo, dyed papers, botanical printing, bookbinding and more.


You will leave with a tattered and torn, timeworn book, filled with vintage treasures.

Meet Kate Thompson

Kate has a Degree in Fibre Arts and worked as a textile print designer for 20 years. Her work as a Fibre Artist involved creating abstract 3-dimensional forms, until she started painting in 2009 focussing on portrait figurative paintings in acrylics, watercolours, and oils. Kate is an experimenter, combining her love of painting and textiles to develop her own unique substrates using vintage linens and ledger papers to create interesting mixed media pieces. Kate’s website “Fractured Angelics” expresses the continuous theme throughout her works. Her art parallels with her spiritual journey which identifies with “flawed, cracked, and fractured” human yearning for peace and fulfilment. Kate is admired for her intricate detailed mixed media works that blends drawing, painting, and textile art. Her workshops are known for their depth, creativity, and for her love of teaching.
