Event description

Description

An event series hosted by Fjord, Fjord Hosts explores the tensions that exist in today's world, the opportunities they pose and how to best navigate them to create positive, long-lasting change.

The topic for this event is The Inclusivity Paradox - designing to be inclusive at a mass scale.

Join us on April 17th for an evening of thought provoking discussion with a panel including Sasha Abram (Design Lead at First Australians Capital) and Alexandra Skougarevskaya (Design Manager for Atlassian Design System) and Sarah Pulis (Accessibility Services Director for Intopia). As part of the evening, we will also be asking the audience to join us for a drink and participate in a 'design doing' activity. In true Fjord style you will leave inspired and challenged, having used your head and your hands!

Inclusivity represents both an opportunity and challenge for many organisations, ranging in size and complexity from startups to governments. Increasingly, we expect organisations to see and engage with us as individuals. However, there is a risk that by trying to be more inclusive, organisations inadvertently exclude others, and that in trying to speak to the individual, organizations risk saying something that is not quite right.

We've seen Gilette's #metoo razor ad on 'toxic masculinity' get praise - and abuse, whilst at the same time biased algorithms are failing significant sections of society. Showcasing messages of inclusivity; a drag queen superhero entered the Marvel Universe, Sesame Street introduced its first homeless muppet and Microsoft chose to use the Super Bowl to advertise the Xbox Adaptive Controller for gamers with limited mobility.

A major challenge in the year ahead will be working out how to design to be inclusive at scale, and not just for the underrepresented groups speaking out, but for others who haven’t yet raised their voices. It’s one thing to hear diverse voices and another to design products and services that include them.

So what does this mean for designers, innovators and makers, whose work has the potential to impact all people? How do we advocate for inclusive products and services, and support a move from traditional demographics to individual mindsets? How do we design in a way that ensures meaningful interactions for all customers whilst bringing tangible long-term value?
