Description

Please note new location, Barolo Trattoria Camberwell. We apologise for the inconvenience, the function room is upstairs & there is no lift.

*Please note that there is NO SET BOOK for our Book Club! You may come & just listen, or talk about whatever you have recently been reading - no pressure, just books!*

Our guest authors for Tuesday August 6th are:

Elizabeth Bryer - Speculative fiction, From Here On, Monsters (debut)

Elizabeth Bryer grew up in Heyfield and now lives in Birraranga/Melbourne, on never-ceded sovereign lands of the Gunaikurnai and Kulin nations respectively. Novels she has translated from Spanish include Claudia Salazar Jiménez's Blood of the Dawn (Deep Vellum, 2016) and Aleksandra Lun's The Palimpsests (David R. Godine, 2019), for which she was awarded a PEN/Heim from PEN America.
Now, with From Here On, Monsters, it's a Naomi Alderman, Paul Auster or Emily St John Mandel for Australian letters - Elizabeth Bryer is a powerful new voice: an imagination like no other.

Note from Kat - currently halfway through this, & I can assure you, it's spectacular! I was in a bit of a reading slump, but this has renewed my interest. Even if you can't make it to Book Club, I urge you to pre-order & read this book!! Email me to pre-order so I can let you know as soon as it's available.

PRAISE FOR FROM HERE ON, MONSTERS 'A novel that places the reader into the abyss of storytelling. this is more than a book of secrets, codes, geniuses, history, & language. It is more than you could imagine.' Tara June Winch

'Traverses the chasm between truth and history, and challenges our faith in the liberatory potential of art. It's a modern Australian novel about modern Australia that, refreshingly, doesn't read at all like a modern Australian novel.' Shaun Prescott

Serena Geddes - children's picture book, Rosie & Rasmus (newest)

Serena Geddes has been illustrating children’s books since 2009. She has illustrated the Lulu Bell books and has also worked for Walt Disney Animation Australia.

Rosie & Rasmus: Two kindred spirits-a lonely young girl and a solitary young dragon-find each other and discover the power and magic of friendship in this sweetly simple picture book. Every day, Rosie waits and watches as children play together, laugh and share stories, hoping she can join in the fun and make a new friend. (Highly recommended by Kat! Great price & absolutely adorable.)

Jordana Borensztajn - Non-fiction, 21 Steps to Become An Awesome Public Speaker

Jordana Borensztajn is a keynote speaker, social media strategist, author, humourist and presentation skills coach who inspires, educates and entertains audiences with action-packed and high-energy presentations and workshops.

Jordana’s experience includes being a News Corp Australia journalist, working as online music editor, content producer and social media manager at Nova Entertainment, writing a business-marketing book called Capture My Attention: How to Stand Out Online with Creative Content, performing two sold-out shows in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, speaking at corporate conferences around the world, and running a schools program that explores online safety for students.

Albert Trajstman - Australian fiction, Faraway Places

Albert Trajstman spent half a biblical life span working in science. He is the author of numerous publications that have appeared in learned scientific journals. Following a number of life-changing events, he ceased exercising his brain’s left-side to give its right-side ago. He has directed his energy to poetry, performance poetry and writing prose. The novel Faraway Places is his most recent effort. He has also appeared as an extra in a number of movies, US miniseries and iconic Australian TV series.

'A gripping read!‘…diverse and ambitious novellas – read Cameron Woodhead’s review in the SMH/Age here Faraway Places is a collection of three novellas that goes to dark and dingy places that the faint-hearted might wish are truly faraway. But are they?

We will provide some finger foods and beverages/tea/coffee on the night, as well as some giveaways supplied by publishers. The cost for each evening will be $15.00 all inclusive.

Please join us by booking a ticket here.

Doors open 6.30pm for a 6.45pm start.

Dymocks Camberwell celebrated 2012 The National Year of Reading with the inauguration of our very own First Tuesday Book Club, each month.

After our guest authors speak, we finish the evening by talking about our favourite novels, both new & older ones. We will ask participants to comment about books they have read or are reading, just like a normal book club. We won’t be setting a monthly book, as we want to hear about as many books as possible, including old favourites. You may just want to listen at times and hear about other people’s experiences with their books. It is totally up to you!
