FIRN Women invites you to a virtual seminar “Disaster Relief, Inc.” presented by Cara Vansteenkiste, UNSW.

Abstract

Investigating corporate philanthropy in a natural disasters event study setting, we find that strategic corporate giving can increase shareholder value by boosting the firm’s reputation and sales. Using an international sample of firms providing disaster-relief grants to affected communities, our results show that the strategic benefits of donating increase with disaster relevance and saliency. They are stronger for larger disasters, for more marketing- and consumer-oriented firms, for firms in more competitive and more controversial industries, and for in-kind donations. Overall, our results suggest that corporate donations add shareholder value when firms can use philanthropy to boost their image and social capital.

All FIRN members are welcome to this event. Please register your interest and you will be sent an email the day before with the Zoom code and password.
