Space assets such as satellites, play a key role in the development of advanced communication systems and provide an indispensable safety tool for people in distress.
Australia, (through the Australian Maritime Safety Authority) is responsible for approximately 10% of the worlds surface but relies on the USA, Europe and others to provide the space assets and systems that we depend on. The country also plays a significant role in international rescue efforts.
The recent bush fires illustrate why resilient communications infrastructure is so critical during emergencies when other systems fail. This is a special challenge for Australia given its size.
Development of standards is key to ensuring we have effective systems for safety alerting.
The rising interest in space and its applications may enable Australia to contribute to the technologies underpinning these systems and create new opportunities for government and business.
