Financial Modelling in Microsoft Excel - Level 1

Financial Modelling in Excel is a combination of financial theory, and practical application in Microsoft Excel. The course centres around developing financial models to evaluate simple projects and businesses. You will be introduced to the Discounted Cash Flow Model, and several Project Evaluation Tools such as NPV, IRR, and payback periods. This is an introductory course and is suitable for anyone that wants to build a solid foundation in financial modelling, and corporate finance concepts. All relevant theory will be taught prior to the completion of each Excel Exercise. Professionals from non-finance backgrounds are strongly encouraged to attend.


What will you learn?

  • How to apply Project Evaluation Criterion such as NPV, IRR, and Payback Periods to inform business decisions.
  • How to calculate WACC given an estimate of the return on equity and return on debt.
  • Understand how to estimate the Cost of Equity, and the impact of leverage on a firm’s cost of equity.
  • Create a pro-forma Income Statement given a set of project assumptions
  • Create basic Discounted Cash Flow Models
  • Develop Discounted Cash Flows Models for irregular cash flows
  • Understand how DCF Valuations can be manipulated, and the importance of clear assumptions.
  • Apply Excel’s Data Tables to run simple sensitivity analysis on the DCF Model
  • Apply Excel’s Goal Seek to run break-even analysis

Lesson 7: Case Study

  • This section ties together all the previous information. We will examine the valuation of a small private business. You will be presented with a valuation model, along with some background information about the business. Together, we will evaluate the validity of the financial model’s assumptions, deconstruct the value drivers of the business, and come to a decision on what would constitute a fair value for the business based on the information. It will be an interesting, and challenging exercises!
