Finance and Microsoft Excel Skills for Small Businesses

In this full day workshop, you will learn how to estimate how much your business is worth, how to develop cost and revenue models for your business, and how to financially evaluate new projects and investment opportunities.

This is an introductory course, aimed at equipping individuals with financial knowledge, and the Microsoft excel skills they need to make better business decisions, and improve their profitability. We assume you have no financial knowledge and will provide you will all the templates and files you need to complete the in-class exercises and case studies.

What to bring on the day:

  • Laptop with Microsoft Excel Installed (Preferable), or access to Google Sheets.

While not essential, access to Microsoft Excel will allow you to build flexible financial models that you can customize for your own business.

Lesson 3: Project Evaluation Techniques

  • Too many ideas, not enough money. Capital budgeting
  • NPV, IRR, and Payback Periods
  • Using Excel’s NPV, and IRR


Lesson 4: Scenario Analysis (Microsoft Excel)

  • Data Tables
  • Scenario Manager
  • Break-Even Analysis


Lesson 5: Build your own Financial Model

This section ties together all the previous information. We will examine a simple business case, define our assumptions, and build the financial model together from scratch. The purpose of this lesson is to improve your ability to take an idea, identify key factors and drivers to its success, and quickly identify its viability.
