In this romantic comedy, inspired by true events, young Princesses Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon) and Margaret (Bel Powley) want to join the festivities on the streets of London on VE day, against the wishes of their parents King George VI (Rupert Everett) and Queen Elizabeth (Emily Watson). Eventually their parents relent, and they are allowed to leave Buckingham Palace and celebrate with the “commoners”, provided they are accompanied by chaperones. No one recognises them which allows the princesses to be able to mingle with the crowds incognito. A comic romp ensues with Princess Margaret slipping away from her chaperone in search of more fun and her older responsible sister in hot pursuit.
