Event description

Description

History tells us that the original inhabitants were hunter gatherers who lived in isolation for thousands of years. Blah, blah, blah.” - Trisha Morton-Thomas

In the lead-up to January 26, it is important to examine and question our national identity and history. Who has written this history and who does it respresent? Filmmaker Trisha Morton-Thomas asks these questions and more in her film "Occupation: Native", which dishes up a fresh look at our colonial past. Exploring everything they never taught you at school but should have. It’s Australian history, but not like you have you ever seen or heard before.

"If Occupation Native sounds like a dry history lesson, it’s not. Morton-Thomas injects much levity and playfulness, at times deploying the inimitable Steven Oliver to bounce off in comedy sketches." - The Guardian

Aboriginal people have largely been left out of our history and it is vital that we start to embrace our First Nations people in the national account of how our country was founded and developed.

After the film, take part in a discussion featuring Uncle Ken Canning and Uncle Bruce Pascoe (both featured in the film) along with Sharni Jones, Head of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collections at the Australian Museum.

Film: 6pm
Q&A: 7pm

Tickets to the screening also include free admission to Ngalu Warrawi Marri (We Stand Strong). This edition of Culture Up Late runs between 5pm and 9pm at the Australian Museum on the same night.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people should be aware that this movie may contain images or names of people who have since passed away.
