IN MY OWN WORDS - Screening and Q&A

Research reveals that 45-70%* of Aboriginal adults are functionally illiterate.

Follow the journey of students and their passionate teachers in the inspiring film In My Own Words, as these adults discover the transformative power of reading and writing for the first time.

A major contributing factor to low literacy and numeracy is the failure of the mainstream education system to assist parents who may not have had opportunities to build basic literacy and numeracy skills. Consequently, those parents can struggle to support their children’s learning and the cycle of illiteracy can continue.

This uplifting documentary focuses on a classroom in Brewarrina, a rural northwest NSW town with a majority Aboriginal population. Filming every day of the 13-week Literacy for Life Foundation course, director Erica Glynn captures the women and men, hardship and resilience, friendship and humour behind the sobering statistics.

Film: 5:45pm for 6pm

Q&A: 7:15pm

Tickets to the screening also include free admission to `Half the Sky'. This edition of Culture Up Late runs between 5pm and 9pm at the Australian Museum on the same night.
