One of the greatest mysteries of the culinary world is why so few people know about the amazing food of the Philippines or why there are so few Filipino cookbooks available in English. 

Well that is all about to change!  We have two amazing Filipino cookbooks & cookbook authors to share with you.  You REALLY don't want to miss this...

We are extremely excited to be hosting authors Nicole Ponseca and Yasmin Newman with the support of  Melbourne based Filipino food activists,  The Entree.Pinays

On Monday 11th March (yes - its Labor Day), we'll be exploring the origins, flavours and signature dishes of  Filipino food, whilst chatting to authors Nicole & Yasmin about their love of Filipino food.

So what is Filipino food?  The techniques (including braising, boiling, and grilling) are simple, the ingredients are readily available, and the results are extraordinary. Filipino food is a true and natural fusion food influenced by Chinese, Spanish, Mexican, Japanese, Portuguese, Arabic and many other trade cultures.  There are puckeringly sour adobos with meat so tender you can cut it with a spoon, along with other national dishes like kare-kare (oxtail stew) and kinilaw (fresh seafood dressed in coconut milk and ginger). There are Chinese-influenced pansit (noodle dishes) and lumpia (spring rolls); Arabic influenced cuisine, with its layered spicy curries; and dishes that reflect the tastes and ingredients of the Spaniards, Mexicans, and Americans who came to the Philippines and stayed.

About Nicole

Nicole Ponseca is an American restaurateur, author and passionate advocate for both Filipino cuisine and the Philippines.  Born in San Diego, she moved to New York to pursue a career in advertising and quickly realized the city lacked authentic Filipino food. Working by day in advertising to support her work at night to learn the restaurant business,

Nicole eventually realised her dream and with chef Miguel Trinidad opened Maharlika in 2011 and Jeepney in 2012. Their first cookbook, I Am a Filipino: And This Is How We Cook, is a celebration of their hugely popular and critically acclaimed restaurants and their Filipino heritage and was published to great acclaim last year.  

I Am a Filipino instantly went to the top of the best-seller lists and was featured as one of the best cookbooks of the year by Eater, The New Yorker, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, New York Times Book Review, Houston Chronicle, Food52, PopSugar and many others. 

About Yasmin

Yasmin Newman is an Australian born and based food & travel writer, cookbook author, photographer and presenter.  Her award winning book 7000 Islands: A Food Portrait of the Philippines, is a beautiful evocative journey through the exotic land of her mother and introduces Australia to the rich and vibrant cuisine that is Filipino food.

Yasmin travels regularly to the Philippines. She is a regular contributor and presenter of food and travel  content on SBS

FAQs

Can I buy/pre-order signed copies of I Am a Filipino ($70) or 7000 Islands ($29.95)?

Yes - copies will be available for signing and purchase on the night.  If you can't attend we can organise to post signed copies to you.  Postage (tracked & insured): Victoria $7.95; Australia wide $9.95; overseas we'll quote.

I've already purchased the book - can I bring it to be signed?

Well...to be honest...we'd rather you didn't...we do these events to sell books. We subsidise our events by the sale of books on the night. We would prefer not to have to increase our event fee. If you did want to bring a book along for signing, please consider buying a book instore on the night to support our events.

Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?

As alcohol will be served, attendees must be 18+ or accompanied by a parent/guardian

 What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

If you have been to one of our events before, please note we have moved to the northern side of the Queen Victoria Market.  Our new address is 115-121 Victoria Street (next to A Shed)

We recommend public transport.

The 19, 20, 57 (Elizabeth St)and 55 (William & Peel St) trams go past the Queen Victoria Market and run frequently.  We are in the Free Tram Zone and are a short 50m walk from the Elizabeth St Queen Victoria Market stop and the Peel St Queen Victoria Market stop.  Melbourne Central and Flagstaff railway stations are two blocks away.

Parking restrictions usually apply in the Melbourne CBD until 8.30pm.  You can park on Queen Street near the corner of Victoria Street.  There are limited parking spaces on Victoria Street.

As this event is on a public holiday, public transport timetables and parking restrictions may be different.

 Is my registration/ticket transferable?

Yes - to another person - just have them present your ticket on the evening.  

What is the refund policy?

Tickets are not refundable but can be transferred if you can't attend.
