Description

The Festival of Play showcases the importance of children’s early literacy and language development through play.

This free forum provides the opportunity to explore the importance of play in children’s early development from leaders in the field including international keynote speaker and educator, Nathan Wallis. Nathan will explore how the brain works, how it develops, and how neuroscience can better inform our interactions with children.

Participants will then explore a range of workshops focusing on the importance of play.

Who should attend?

This forum will be of interest to groups who work with young children including professional educators, community organisations and also parents and carers.

Registration required. NB: All attendees will attend the morning sessions and you will have a choice of 3 afternoon workshop tickets, one in each timeslot.

Morning sessions

  • 9am |Nathan Wallis, neuroscience educator| How neuroscience can better inform our interaction with children.
  • 11am |Holly Rynsent, community development worker| How the Play Cave Project inspired play between adults and children in Logan.

Lunch

  • 12.30pm-1pm: Library tours

Afternoon workshops

Six workshops will be held concurrently in each timeslot: 1pm - 1.40pm, 1.50pm - 2.30pm, 2.40pm - 3.20pm. Book your general admission ticket and indicate your preference for one workshop in each timeslot on the order form ie a total of three workshops.

  • |Sing & Grow| A practical workshop that showcases how music can embed literacy into outdoor play. Presented by Lorna Berry, music therapist.
  • |3a. How does the Abecedarian approach use play to support children's early learning and emergent literacy skills?| Gail Robinson, Learning and Literacy Outreach Program worker and 3a certified coach.
  • |The importance of play in formal schooling| The important role play has in children's successful transition to formal schooling, with Sharon Ward, support teacher, Deception Bay North State School.
  • |USC - Without play - No learning?| Dr Anne Drabble and Dr Uwe Terton from USC shed some light on how learning is transferred from play into skills and knowledge and the impact on human growth and development.
  • |Participate in the codesign of the Pop-Up Play Space (PUPS)| Share your ideas and concepts and help contribute to the design of PUPS that will tour all 10 libraries within the Moreton Bay Region.
  • |Communities for Children Logan| This session will explore the benefits of community organisations providing opportunities for parents and caregivers to engage in quality play experiences with their children. Presented by Holly Rynsent, community development worker.

Parent/Guardian supervision
Adults are required to stay in the library while children under 12 attend library programs. Young people aged 12 and up can attend library programs unsupervised.
