Event description

Description

The FASD and Justice Workshop is hosted by the FASD Research Australia Centre of Research Excellence as part of the 2nd Australasian FASD Conference ‘Our Science Our Stories’. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a permanent condition characterised by complex behavioural, cognitive, physical and psychological problems including early onset chronic disease, poor mental health and increased risk of interaction with the criminal justice system.

This one-day workshop is relevant to those who work with individuals living with FASD and their families. It will provide an insight into how individuals with the condition may interact with the justice system: as offenders, victims, witnesses or other parties in criminal, civil and child protection and family law matters. The structure of this conference will be a combination of presentations, panel discussion and small table case study discussions. A range of topics will be covered including, but not limited to, initial engagement with authorities, courtroom considerations and support strategies.

Speakers will include Judge Fitzgerald of the Youth Court in New Zealand; Dr Michelle Stewart, Canadian academic; Ms Karen Farley SC, of Legal Aid, a parent of a FASD affected child, and others.

Please note: this workshop is open to professionals working with individuals in contact with the criminal justice and care and protection sectors of the justice system. For example, lawyers and magistrates, child protection and foster care organisations, disability services, education, police, corrective services, and families of individuals engaged with the justice system.

The Platform is ideally located in the eastern end of the city along the terrace. The space is well designed to help facilitate creative thinking and encourage collaboration. The location offers multiple transport options, whether commuting by car or public transport.

Attendees are asked to arrive at 8.30am to register for a 9am start. Morning tea and a light lunch will be served to workshop attendees at The Platform. If you have any special dietary requirements please specify these when registering.

A workshop program for the day will be sent to attendees closer to the workshop date.

Please contact Candice.Rainsford@telethonkids.org.au if you have any queries about the event.
