About this event
Wednesday 6th July 2022 @ 9am – 3pm
The kids become mini farmers and get set to work doing farm chores. On our tour we check in on the pigs and bees and restock our pet chicken’s bedding, ensure they have fresh drinking water and collect the eggs. We work on our dedicated Farm Kids garden plot, digging, weeding and harvesting. We tend to our onsite worm Subpod and collect macadamia nuts from the orchard. If the opportunity arises, the children assist the farmers with their chores. They cook, craft and create and see where their food comes from as well as experience countless opportunities to learn about teamwork, community, and ethical farming practices.
What is included?
Our Mini Farmers Program introduces children to real life farming. They get their hands dirty and learn many aspects of organic and sustainable farming.
Farm Chores
We start with a hands on fun tour of the farm, checking the pigs and bees and restocking our pet chicken’s bedding, we ensure they have fresh food and drinking water and we collect the eggs. We tend to our onsite worm Subpod and If the opportunity arises, we assist the farmers with their chores.
We work on our dedicated Farm Kids garden plot and harvest the produce if it is ready. If there are tasks available, we will also work alongside Liberation Larder on their market garden and learn how proper nurturing leads to healthy food production for families in need in our community. (Tasks will vary depending on what is needed to do at that time)
Discussion Focus
- The importance of lady bugs and beneficial bugs in the garden. We go on a lady bug hunt.
- The sun and its importance in the growth of plants and humans. We touch on plant positioning and simple photosynthesis for plants and Vitamin D for humans.
- The benefits of having healthy soil on a farm and how we can improve soil quality
Cooking
- We make Natural Coffee Fertilizer and Garlic Bug Spray for our Garden that protects our beneficial bugs but deters the nasty bugs.
- Create a clay sculpture of a beneficial bug
Creating
