Event description
A one-day police accountability & family violence training for community lawyers & family violence workers

About this Event

This training/practice forum focuses on what we can do as lawyers and support workers to support survivors when responses from police don’t improve safety, cause harm or raise accountability issues. It will cover key family violence & police accountability issues, common practice dilemmas, legal remedies and other advocacy pathways.

Topics include:

• Responding to police duty failures and breaches of the Code of Practice

• Misidentification, criminalisation and criminal defence of family violence survivors

• Running police complaints files: Police complaints processes and specific issues for family violence complainants

• Alternative legal remedies and intentional torts

• Survivor-centric advocacy for police accountability and supporting survivors who do not wish to engage with police

• Managing risk in police accountability responses

• Referral pathways

Please note: This training has a legal focus and is geared towards community lawyers and other lawyers supporting survivors of family violence. It may also be applicable to social workers in integrated services and family violence workers responding to police accountability issues.

Venue and accessibility information: The training will be held in the Supper Room at Kensington Town Hall, 30-34 Bellair Street, Kensington. The room is located on the ground floor and is accessible via an entry ramp. Accessible, all gender toilets are located on the same floor.

Train: The closest train station is Kensington Train Station, Craigieburn Line (500 m walk down Bellair Street)

Tram: Route 57 – stop 26 (Newmarket Plaza/Racecourse Road, Kensington)
