Event description

Description

A series of information sessions to educate and engage community members about the services provided within the family violence sector in Goulburn. Each session is held over breakfast time on the third Thursday of the month. This session focusses on family violence in a law context and IVOs

"The Goulburn Valley Community Legal Centre is a program of the NFP, Advocacy & Rights Centre Ltd, in Bendigo.

GVCLC is a generalist service providing information, advice and casework assistance on a wide range of legal issues to disadvantaged members of the community. It operates across the LGA’s of Greater Shepparton, Moira, Mitchell, Strathbogie, Benalla and Mansfield. Our lawyers provide Duty Lawyers for the Family Violence Lists at Shepparton, Cobram, Seymour, Benalla and Mansfield Courts. Around 55% of our total work is related to family violence and family law issues and all our lawyers have responsibilities in the jurisdiction.

We are heavily invested in partnerships with a number of community agencies to deliver projects funded by Government through the Department of Justice and Regulation, Victoria Legal Aid, and the Legal Services Board & Commissioner. These projects include a Therapeutic Justice Practice working with our partner, Primary Care Connect, to assist highly vulnerable clients in the Shepparton Magistrates’ Court; a Health-Justice Partnership with Rumbalara which has embedded a lawyer and paralegal at the Mooroopna Campus of this ACCHO; and a partnership with Uniting Care Kildonan working to improve understanding of the legal system amongst young CALD Community members.

The strong emphasis placed by our State Government on the scourge of family since 2015 has seen our ability to deliver services grow significantly across the whole of the catchment and, while we have strong relationships with many services that can offer assistance to our clients, we are always keen to develop more.

Most of the work we do is underpinned by a philosophy that recognises the importance of dealing with the social and health issues underlying peoples’ adverse experiences of the justice system."

This session is suitable for community members who wish to learn more about the services available in Goulburn for those experiencing or at risk of experiencing family violence.
