Event description
Level 1 is an educational pathway in family-centred developmental care that is suitable for all disciplines in any neonatal centre.

About this event

The program focuses on raising awareness of the theory and evidence that supports developmentally supportive care.

The program runs for 1.5 days with a maximum of 40 course participants.

Topics covered in the program include:

  • Models of developmental care
  • Brain development
  • Observing babies
  • Family participation
  • Stress and pain
  • Sleep Sensory environment
  • Kangaroo Care
  • Motor development and positioning
  • Early feeding experience

PROGRAM: DAY ONE

  • 8:00-8:15—Registration

SESSION ONE

  • 8:15 - 8:45—Introduction
  • 8:45 - 9:15 —Brain development and developmental care
  • 9:15 - 10:00—Observing Babies
  • 10:00 -10:30 —Morning Tea

SESSION TWO

  • 10:30 -11:15 —Observing Babies in the clinical setting (videos)
  • 11:15 - 12:00 —Family Centred Care in the NICU
  • 12:00 -13:00 —Practical workshops:
  1. Support during caregiving, Swaddled bathing/weights, ISOC, ROP and LP, and,
  2. Side-lying nappy change and five-step dialogue
  • 13:00 - 13:30 —Lunch

SESSION THREE

  • 13:30 - 14:15 —Early feeding support
  • 14:15 - 15:15 —Practical Workshops:
  1. Evaluation of local caregiving practices, and,
  2. Feeding readiness and experience
  • 15:15 - 15:45 —Motor development
  • 15:45 - 16:00 —Questions, Evaluation and close

PROGRAM: DAY TWO

SESSION ONE

  • 8:00 -9:00 —Sleep and Sensory development and the neonatal clinical setting
  • 9:00 - 10:00 —Stress and Pain
  • 10:00 - 10:30 —Morning Tea

SESSION TWO

  • 10:30 - 11:30— Practical workshops:- Nests, lifting and turning- Kangaroo care
  • 11:30 -12:30 —The next steps – where to from here
  • 12:30 - 13:00—Questions, Discussion, Evaluation and close

Program deferrals and refunds

In the event you are unable to commence the program you are registered for we will transfer your registration to the next upcoming program. Refunds are offered on an individual case by case basis.

Sometimes life gets busy and it is hard to fit everything in! We understand this and will offer you the opportunity to defer the completion of the program for up to 12 months, the revised date for the completion of your program will be provided with one program deferral offered per participant. Deferrals are undertaken in consultation with the program coordinator and require email communication
