Event description

Description

Every year one in three people aged 60 years and above fall over, resulting in falls being the leading cause of injury and death among older adults. Unfortunately, many older adults in Australia are not aware that there are good ways of preventing falls. Falls are often thought of as just a result of ageing, so older people often don't take an active role in falls prevention.

In order to address this problem, and to encourage older people in a compelling way to take action(s) to prevent falls before they occur, the falls prevention research team from Perth’s Curtin University has developed a series of three falls risk awareness video advertisements. These videos highlight that falls are preventable, and advertise about where to find information on healthy ageing activities that are also good for falls prevention. We want to evaluate older peoples’ response to these video advertisements. To this end we are organising a FREE World Café Forum on Thursday the 12th of October 2017 in the Perth CBD. For this three hour forum we want to invite around 100 people over the age of 50.

This World Café forum is part of a research project organised by researchers from Curtin University. We will ask all participants to give us some general information (such as name, age, postcode) when they arrive at the event and sign a consent form. This gives us permission to record everyone's feedback and comments on the video advertisements. You can register for the event now, or if you would like to receive more information before deciding to participate we can send you a Participant Information Statement. For this contact Dr. Lex de Jong (08 9266 1861; lex.dejong@curtin.edu.au).
