Event description

Description

401 Collins St is a classic 1930’s art deco style, 10 level structure with heritage stonework features on the front facade.

Cathedral Stone were approached to first survey the extent of damage, and then undertake the first significant restoration of this building in over 80 years.

A new construction site at George St, Sydney gave the opportunity to extract the matching sandstone for the project. Many of the original quarries have been closed and the environs have been built over, making the sourcing of the same stone difficult.

The large quarried blocks were sawn and sent to Melbourne where they were worked by hand. Some pieces take up to a week for one mason to complete.

The new stone replaces the existing stone which is nearing 100 years old and is particularly weathered at the top of the building.

James will provide an interesting and informative presentation on the skill and care taken by his stonemasons to both save the original features but extend the life of this facade by another 100 years.
