F-111 Sole Operator Program: Engineering and Innovation for an Ageing Fleet
Tue. 12 July 2016, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm AEST
Royal Aeronautical Society Melbourne Branch July CPD event. 6.00pm for 6.30pm lecture start.
Speaker: SQNLDR David Child, RAAF.
Abstract: For almost 40 years, the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) operated the F-111C strike aircraft with engineering support provided by a number Defence organisations and Industry. This presentation provides an insight into the trials and tribulations of the F-111 Sole Operator Program, with a focus on the structural integrity elements of the program. Squadron Leader David Child was involved with the SOP over the period 2004 to 2008. The SOP was responsible for the development and maintenance of an in-country capability needed for the continuing safe operation of the RAAF F-111 fleet in light of the rapidly diminishing support from the USAF or the original equipment manufacturer. This is your opportunity to learn about the amazing F-111, and the engineering effort and innovation involved to keep such an aircraft in service. For the over 10 years David specialised in Aircraft Structural Integrity, initially working on the F-111 and recently responsible for structural integrity elements on bringing the C-17 into service. David has worked across all elements of Defence engineering, including maintenance and logistics management, design engineering and project management.
Tea and coffee available before the event.
