Description

Extending the Capabilities of Gifted Students

The Victorian Curriculum F–10 sets out what every student should learn during their first eleven years of schooling. The curriculum is the common set of knowledge and skills required by students for life-long learning, social development and active and informed citizenship.

In the Victorian curriculum there are four capabilities. During this session we will look at two of them and discuss their relevance and importance to gifted students.

The Ethical Capability

For many gifted students ethical behaviour is hard-wired and they find it difficult to understand and tolerate unethical conduct. This capability promotes an analysis and evaluation of ethical issues. This type of rigorous debate is something that many gifted students relish. They often enjoy engaging with the challenges of ethical decision making.

As educators and parents we recognise that many gifted students are likely to become effective and proactive leaders in our communities. Ethical behaviour is also essential in building trusting relationships.

Personal and Social Capability

This capability focuses on enabling students to understand themselves and others, and manage their relationships, lives, work and learning more effectively.

For gifted students, understanding themselves is often fundamental to their success. It is essential for them to recognise and regulate their emotions. Gifted students also require the capacity to work collaboratively with others and develop empathy.
