Eagle Habitat Identification and Management Course – Expression of Interest 2020


PLEASE NOTE: This RSVP is ONLY an expression of interest. There is no payment for this expression of interest.


This course is designed to provide attendees with information on the identification and management of wedge-tailed eagle and white-bellied sea eagle habitat and nest sites.

Dates and locations

This is a two day course.

Theory day: Tramsheds Function Centre Launceston Tuesday 19 May

Field day: Either the Wednesday 20 May or Wednesday 27 May (course attendee will be allocated one of two possible field days to reduce numbers at field sites). Location of field sites TBC. Please nominate your preferred field day in the Expression of Interest and we will do our best to accommodate everyone’s preference.

Who will find the course useful?

Attendees, upon successful completion of the course and assessment, will be accredited in the identification and design of search areas, conducting field searches for nests and conducting activity status checks of nests. Course participants will also gain an understanding of the rationale behind current management recommendations and how the recommended actions should be applied in different scenarios. The course may also be relevant for other people working in conservation and land management fields, including government agencies, consultants, NRM groups and other organisations, councils and landowners.

Topics to be covered

• eagle biology and life history

• the results of monitoring studies

• desktop identification of nest search areas

• protocols for conducting nest searchers

• the use of planning tools to identify risks and management prescriptions

• introduction to Technical Notes and the recording of nest data

• protocols for assessing the activity status of a nest.

The course will be delivered by the Forest Practices Authority raptor specialist (Jason Wiersma) and other guest speakers.

Course fee

The course will only run if a minimum number of 35 participants register interest. The final cost will depend on the number of participants but the estimated costs are as follows (including GST):

Forest practices system workers: $180

Non-Forest System workers: $240

How do I register and pay for the course?

There is a two-stage process:

1. Expression of interest

Register your expression of interest here by 28 Feb 2020. There is no payment required at this stage. Contact your organisation’s Training Coordinator first if this is your company’s policy.

2. Registration

You will be sent a registration and payment link once the expression of interest period is over. FPA has a policy of no refunds for training courses but someone else may attend in your place.
