Description

Destination Chippendale: The Creative Heart of Sydney warmly invites you to attend the July installment of our Explore Chippendale: Historical Walking Tour. The experience includes the opportunity for a sumptuous lunch before the tour where you will get to know your fellow walkers.

Chippendale Creative Precinct is a non- profit organisation that aims to celebrate and develop the lifestyle and culture of Chippendale. The Historical Walking Tours are a monthly initiative that demonstrate our passion for the rich and chequered history of Chippendale and commitment to transforming the precinct into a thriving cultural destination.

On Saturday 8 July, from 2-3.30pm, the Explore Chippendale Historical Walking Tour will explore the stories that each crumbling facade, sandstone block, lacey iron balustrade and cutting- edge skyscraper reveal of the changing face of Chippendale.

BREWERY AND BEYOND
From wetland, to the birthplace of horticulture, Chippendale became an industrial suburb, a place of slums, a showcase for housing reform and even a battleground of faiths. Transformed, Chippendale is now at the heart of Sydney’s inner city revival.

In July, Explore Chippendale: Historical Walking Tour takes you on a time-travelling journey through vestiges of the area’s past, guided by professional historian, Dr. Ian Hoskins. The colonial history, industrial heritage, and sordid tales beneath Chippendale’s cultural renaissance and vibrant culinary and artistic scene will be revealed in an informal, social setting.

Dr. Hoskins has worked as a curator, academic and professional historian for 25 years. He has 10 years experience leading walking tours with a particular focus on the architectural and cultural history of Sydney. Ian is the author of two prize winning books: Sydney Harbour a history and Coast: a history of the New South Wales edge.

Join Dr. Hoskins as he expertly guides you to:
⦁ Kensington Street – a thoroughfare which once ran along the wall of the brewery that defined Chippendale.
⦁ Mortuary Station
⦁ Kent Brewery grain store- built in 1911, an exemplar of the impact of brewing on Chippendale’s industry.
⦁ Thomas Shepherd’s 1820s nursery – a birthplace of Australian horticulture.
⦁ Paradise Row- one of the notorious 19th century ‘slum’ streets of Chippendale.
⦁ St Benedict’s School and Church – one of Sydney’s oldest surviving Catholic churches.
⦁ Strickland Flats – model housing from the early days of Australia’s town planning movement.
⦁ Sydney City Mission - a place of religion, charity and community in the heart of Chippendale.
