Exploratory Data Analysis in Python
Overview
Have you collected some data? Are you excited to start analysing it? Answering all your research questions? Getting to write that fascinating new paper you’ve been planning? Before you can do any of that, you have to get your data to work with you. There are always a million ways your data might not look like what you expected, and we’re here to help you get it into shape so it is ready to give up its answers to you.
Formal synopsis: This workshop introduces the basics of Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA). We will walk you through the process of cleaning and checking data using both examples and your own data, so that you walk out ready to put your new skills into action.
Who the workshop is for: This workshop is aimed at people who want to learn to use Python for their data analysis. We will be walking through importing, cleaning and plotting the data. We assume people know what Python is and can open a Python program and run some code. Key packages will be introduced over the course of the workshop.
This workshop is for Academic and Professional Staff, research students, and affiliates of The University of Sydney (with a valid UniKey)only.
Please use your University of Sydney email address to register i.e. @sydney.edu.au, @uni.sydney.edu.au, etc.
Lead Trainer: Dr Angus Fisk, Data Science Trainer, Sydney Informatics Hub (SIH)
Format: In-person only, full day workshop. Level 5 Auditorium, Moore College (1 King Street, Newtown)
Learning outcomes: By the end of the workshop, you should be able to:
- Conduct a systematic EDA process on unfamiliar data
- Allocate limited time effectively across EDA activities
- Identify and document data quality issues and how they were addressed
- Load, subset, and alter values in pandas dataframes
- Evaluate data distribution through visualisation and summary statistics
If you have any questions, please contact the training team sih.training@sydney.edu.au.
This workshop is part of a series of data science training events. If you'd like to hear when registrations open for other events, please subscribe to Sydney Informatics Hub newsletters.
