The Kids College QLD Explorama workshops at the University of Queensland are FUN and EXCITING. The aim of this day is to provide primary-aged students with the opportunity to work with other like-minded children and immerse themselves in a full day of critical thinking, problem solving and creativity. The Explorama workshops offered are based around the following areas; science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics, environmental studies, robotics, coding, languages and culture, legal studies, writing, illustration, animation and the human body.

Explorama Workshop Leaders

Our workshop leaders are experts in their fields and have a passion for inspiring students and delivering the highest quality learning experiences.


**Please note parents are not required to stay. However, if necessary, you may touch base with your child during break times. Only under extenuating circumstances and prior approval may parents be permitted to be in the classroom once a course begins.

The children involved in the day will be supervised at all times by the workshop leaders both in workshop times and break times. During break times children are supervised in designated areas. Parents are asked not to take children away from the supervised area before notifying the event organisers.

What to bring?

  • Meals – Meals are NOT provided. Students will need to bring their own drinks, morning tea and lunch for the day. Please do not bring foods containing nut or nut products.

  • Clothing – Students are advised to wear casual, comfortable clothing , enclosed footwear & bring a hat.

  • Equipment – Students are advised to bring a pencil case with scissors, glue etc. Some courses require a USB. For art course please bring an old shirt or art smock.

Getting there?

From Brisbane City, take the Riverside Expressway and head towards Toowong along Coronation Drive. Go straight ahead (past Toowong Village Shopping Centre). At the Shell Service Station, turn left. Go straight along this road into Sir Fred Schonell Drive - the main entrance to the University Of Queensland. Go straight ahead towards the parking areas in front of the Forgan Smith Building and the Art Gallery. The Michie buidling is close to the Art Gallery

There are 11 terrific workshops available to choose from. Students elect to attend one workshop (grade appropriate) for the whole day 9-3pm. Each workshop runs from 9-3pm.

Ocean Life Discovery – Grades 1, 2 & 3

Calling all Marine Biologists!

Become a Marine Biologist for the day and learn about our amazing ocean creatures and how to look after them. Explore and interact with weird and wonderful live sea creatures on this amazing ocean discovery! Learn about different marine animals and how we can protect them in their beautiful marine environment! So come along and be a ‘Marine Biologist’ for the day with this fabulous, live and interactive, Ocean Exploration!

Fun with Maths (Junior) – Grades 1, 2 & 3

Think outside the box! Challenge your mind and fire your imagination.

Fun with Maths is hands-on, interactive and loads of fun! This workshop will enrich your child by presenting them with real-life mathematics problems not found in the classroom. Children are taken on a hands-on mathematical journey of amazing explorations of discovery, creative problem solving and investigation. Using both sides of their brain they will problem solve to crack the code and open the safe, create a tower of light, measure the volume of their hands, save the earth from destruction and much, much more. Fun with Maths is filled with games, challenges and lots of fun for everyone.

Inverstig8 – Multi-Arts Workshop – Grades 1, 2 & 3

Calling all creative and investigative minds……Explore a wide range of different creative activities with Bazil Grumble one of Australia’s leading creative arts specialists.

This workshop is a truly action packed creative arts workshop perfect for those who like activities with a lot of diversity and interaction! Students will have the opportunity to delve into many hands-on activities and fun activities which will test their lateral and imaginative thinking such as constructing a tower of a particular height or weight bearing capability. Students will also experiment with a range of artistic mediums and create a gallery of their own work. This workshop encourages participation, interaction, imagination and spontaneity.

Freaky Fun Science- Grades 2 & 3

Wanted – Scientists who like some freaky, slimy, whacky, science fun!

Dress up like a Scientist, lab coats, glasses and all and experience some awesome hands-on experiments with Freaky Fun Science. This is sure to challenge, inspire and blow your mind! Create some crazy chemical reactions, goo, rockets and so much more in the super science challenges you will explore!

Wok’s Hot in China! Grades 2, 3 & 4

Calling all those who love history, ancient cultures and investigating quirky traditions like why you can’t chew long noodles at a birthday dinner in China?

Come and join us on an exciting journey into the language and culture of the orient! Be inspired in a day of fun, noodles, chopsticks, language, calligraphy, Terracotta Warriors and Lion dancing. All you need is your imagination and a healthy appetite for learning as we board our plane and travel into China!

Myth Busters – Grades 3 & 4

Calling all Myth Busters – Are you ready to solve some myths? Only curious kids and super scientists allowed!

Ever wondered if you could really fry an egg using the sun’s rays? Or, is it even possible to remove a tablecloth without disrupting the salt and pepper shakers? Join Myth Busters to examine these and other fun and exciting myths. See what is really possible! It guarantees to be a day of scientific discovery, investigation, awesome fun and lots of cool Myth Busting!

Scratch Game Programming - Grades 2, 3 & 4

Imagine, Program, Create! Learn how to create and program your very own computer game!

Scratch is a computer programming language that makes it easy to create your own interactive stories, animations and games. As young people create Scratch projects, they learn important mathematical and computational ideas, while also learning to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively. This workshop will focus on the use of Scratch to create some very cool games. SCRATCH is a free programming language, so students can continue their projects in class or at home, long after the workshop has finished.

The Author’s Roadmap – Grades 4, 5, 6 & 7

Be inspired, be creative, be the best writer you can be! Could you be the next J.K Rowling?

The Author’s Roadmap will unlock inspirational story ideas and provide tips and tricks to achieve your writing dreams. Students discover why story endings are as crucial as beginnings. Spend a day with one of Australia’s best loved Authors - Allison Paterson, multi-published author, publishing consultant and Redgum Young Writer’s Award judge who will guide writers on the journey to creating a wonderful story – plotting, characterisation, the power of place and the magic of words. But that’s not all – with stories underway, students will then uncover the secret to the pathway to publication. Writing pad, pencils and creative minds are essential. Animation Mash Up – Clay Animation AWESOMENESS! – Grades 4, 5, 6 & 7

Come and get ANIMATED!

Create your own stop motion animation from the ground up and bring your creative ideas to the screen using a mixture of both 3D objects and plasticine. Starting with character development and storytelling, through to a finished animation masterpiece using the latest animation software, the Animation Mash Up workshop covers all the secrets to bring animation to life, 3D modelling, storyboarding, video production, set and prop construction and animation concept development. Do you have what it takes to create an animation mash up that will take your creativity to a whole new level! No experience required, just plenty of imagination.

CSI - Crime Scene Investigators- Grades 5, 6 & 7

Forensic Scientists needed! Put your wit and skills to the test to solve ‘whodunnit’ crimes.

Fancy yourself in a team of Forensic Scientists who will be called upon to solve some mind, boggling cases! Put your wit and skills to the test as you solve ‘whodunnit’ crimes. You will check out a crime scene where you will be collecting and evaluating evidence using techniques such as dusting for fingerprints, conducting a splatter analysis and looking at chromatography. All in a day’s work for a Crime Scene Investigator!

Trial by Jury – Guilty or Innocent! Grades 5, 6 & 7

Guilty or innocent...you decide?

Fancy yourself battling it out in a courtroom of law? Can you argue a good case? You could be the next Judge Judy or Judge Joe Brown.

Be a part of this amazing course where sizzling courtroom antics come to life! You will be taken on an amazing journey with a real-life Barrister. Learn how a courtroom is brought to life and explore various legal roles such as the roles of barristers, witnesses, judges and jury. You will get to take part in a civil and criminal law matter and team up to prepare a case for a very HOT courtroom debate! Guilty or innocent? Don’t miss the opportunity to take a vital role in some sizzling courtroom antics!

Robotics & Engineering Grades 5, 6 & 7

SOLVE, DESIGN, CREATE, TRANSFORM, BUILD, ENGINEER. Build your own Line-Follower Bot and Cup-Bot and bring them to life!

An exciting robotics and engineering workshop designed to test the logical thinking, problem-solving, creativity and engineering skills of our most enquiring minds. Students will have the opportunity to dive deeply into an immersive robotics and engineering experience. As Engineers and Roboticists, students will learn how to use Google’s Design Sprint, put their minds to the test and turn an everyday object, into a robot using some simple electrical circuits and build a Braitenberg vehicle. Students build two bots and take their bots home at the end of the day. This workshop is all about inspiring tomorrow’s engineers – today!
