Event description

Description

This is your chance to uncover and explore Australia’s oldest buildings. Take an exclusive and private tour, and discover how did Parramatta become the birthplace of modern Australia? Explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Old Government House and Domain (Parramatta Park), and immerse yourself in the world of the early governors and the tough decisions they had to make to ensure the survival of the fledgling colony.

Start at the Dairy Cottage where you will have the opportunity to step inside one of Australia’s last intact 18th century colonial settlers’ cottages. Complete with audio-visual, interactive and archaeological displays, this tour offers a rare glimpse into our nation’s multi-layered history. Guests will then be introduced to the World Heritage listed Old Government House (built in 1799, expanded by Governor Lachlan Macquarie from 1810 to 1821) as the administrative centre for the fledgling penal colony and along with Parramatta Park, listed at Old Government House and Domain as part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property. Explore this unique Georgian property and learn about the ten Governors who administered the young colony and the environs from this site. Patrons will also be introduced to a major exhibition Tales from the East: India and NSW as part of this experience. The tour includes a “Settler’s Lunch” and free exhibition entry.

If you have special access requirements, please contact the Parramatta Heritage and Visitor Information Centre 02 8839 3311.
