Experiment and Survival: How Government Farm saved the Colony
As part of the 2017 Australian Heritage Festival, come and explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Old Government House and Domain (Parramatta Park), and learn how the Government Farm saved the starving fledgling British colony.
You’ll be first toured by experts through the National Trust of Australia (NSW)'s iconic Old Government House in Parramatta Park, and be immersed in the world of the early Governors and the tough decisions they had to make to ensure the colony could survive. Old Government House was the country home for the first ten Governors of NSW, who chose Parramatta for its uniquely abundant and fertile land.
After learning about the early attempts at growing crops, developing a productive farm and the role the convicts played in this story; then enjoy a rustic “settler’s lunch” at Lachlan’s Restaurant.
Finally, get an exciting glimpse into our colonial past with a guided-tour of the Dairy and Rangers Cottages. Hear the fascinating story of George Salter, the ex-convict turned cattleman who built the Dairy Cottage in 1796 - now one of the nation’s oldest buildings. Explore its sunken milk processing room that once supplied Governor Macquarie with fresh milk, cheese and cream. You’ll also watch audio-visual displays that recreate life in the early days of European settlement and explain the history of the area’s traditional owners and early inhabitants.
The tour will finish at 2pm at the Dairy and Rangers Cottages.
Please bring comfortable shoes for walking, and be prepared for wet and/or hot weather.
Please note: Due to the historic nature of The Dairy Precinct, there is uneven surfaces inside the Dairy and Rangers Cottages and surrounding gardens, paths and entries that may cause trips, slips or falls.
A number of areas in the Dairy Precinct have limited accessibility. If you have special access requirements please contact the Trust on 02 98957500 prior to booking.
This is a pilot event in partnership between the National Trust of Australia (NSW) and Parramatta Park Trust.
