Learn about the science behind Tasmania's annual raptor survey: join Dr James Pay and Dr Clare Hawkins in two live webinars

About this event

Teachers! Parents! School students of all ages! Here's a FREE opportunity from the Bookend Trust to get thoroughly engaged in authentic, accessible science (and more). Join us for two free, LIVE webinars with the scientists involved, as part of our free Expedition Class education program.

Zoologists Dr Clare Hawkins and Dr James Pay present an introduction and a wrap-up, to top and tail the free Expedition Class online resources (each webinar is presented on two different dates, for schools to choose). Get James' personal angle on his research into wedge-tailed eagles, and Clare's stories about past and current Where? Where? Wedgie! surveys. And put together some burning questions to ask them.

Where? Where? Wedgie! is a long-term, rigorously designed research study, carried out by large numbers of Tasmanian volunteers - from young potential scientists, keen to learn, to professional ornithologists. Together, we track changes in the population size of the Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle and other birds of prey.

Our education program Expedition Class provides a bunch of wonderful resources relating to Where? Where? Wedgie! James and Clare present a series of online videos that take students on a 9 day scientific journey around Tasmania to learn about birds and ecology, their habits and habitats, and the science behind Where? Where? Wedgie! this May. Check out day 1 - meet James and Clare, and discover Where? Where? Wedgie! for yourself.

Building from the videos are a series of brand-new, cross-curricular, online teaching resources, developed by Art Education Australia in collaboration with the Bookend Trust. Incorporating richly integrated content and inquiry, these are aligned to Australian Curriculum: Science, Visual Arts, HASS, English and more. While the curriculum mapping centres around grades 3 /4, the content and inquiry questions can be adapted up and down at teachers’ discretion to cater for younger and older grades and individual learning needs and preferences.
