Description

You're invited to the exhibition launch of

Entwined

Entwined, part of TARNANTHI: Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art, showcases the work of contemporary Yirrkala printmakers made in response to string figures collected and documented during the 1948 American-Australian Scientific Expedition to Arnhem Land.

The string figures, made of kurrajong (Brachychiton paradoxum) bark fibre, are often referred to as ‘string games’, but they are actually instructive tools through which we learn about Yolngu (people in central and north-east Arnhem Land) life.

Artists from Bula’bula Arts have hand made string to celebrate this ongoing tradition, and a number of string figures from the South Australian Museum's collection - made of plant fibre and also human hair, animal fur and industrial materials - are also presented.

Human ingenuity is demonstrated universally across ancient cultures by the multitude of uses of plant resources and, in this case, the creation of fibre from plants.

Entwined is supported by TARNANTHI: Festival of Contemporary Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art, presented by the Art Gallery of South Australia in partnership with BHP and with support of the Government of South Australia.

Please RSVP to the launch by clicking the buttons on the top right hand side and completing your details.

We look forward to seeing you there.

The Santos Museum of Economic Botany and its exhibition programme are proudly supported by Santos.
