Event description

Description

Working with cognitively impaired clients can be a significant challenge, particularly when access to assessment services and resources are limited. Cognitive difficulties may arise from a range of aetiologies including acquired brain injury, mental health, substance use, or neurodevelopmental weaknesses and can have a significant impact on treatment outcomes and recovery.

This half day workshop will provide practical and realistic strategies for working with clients who present with, or have complaints, of cognitive difficulties. In particular, this workshop will cover two main themes:

  • Cognitive functioning, substance use and key indicators of impairment

  • Implementing recommendations to address cognitive changes including compensatory strategies, lifestyle factors and goal setting.

Presenters: Dr James Gooden is a Clinical Neuropsychologist based at the Turning Point neuropsychology service in Richmond, Victoria, which provides specialised neuropsychological assessments and associated recommendations and strategies to clients from the AOD sector. James has a strong interest in the AOD, brain injury and adult neuropsychology fields with his research published in journals such as the Journal of Head Trauma Rehabilitation, Neuropsychological Rehabilitation and Australian Journal of Occupational Therapy. James has presented at both national and international conferences.

Dr Catherine Cox is a Senior Clinical Neuropsychologist at Turning Point with extensive experience in paediatric and adult neuropsychology fields. Catherine has been involved in a range of research projects over her career including international multi-centre drug trials, and facilitating student research within the healthcare setting. Catherine has presented her clinical and research work at both national and international conferences.
