Event description
Hoop skills and fitness classes at Tonsley. Beginner class.

About this Event

Join us for individual or small group classes learning how to hula hoop. Fun for all, you'll be able to use hoops of different sizes, and your core strength and fitness will increase.

The moves we cover are the basic waist hooping, ninjas, and other large hoop moves, with some double hoop work. Six or so lessons will have you feeling accomplished. Your fitness and flexibility will have improved too!

Classes are small; you might be the only one, or 4 others might show...it's very much a drop in session. However many turn up, I focus on the class members...and everyone gets practice, a gradual introduction to skill, and a few tricky moves as well!

What to wear...you are going to get warm, and hoops work best on a smooth surface. Big jackets make it very difficult to keep a hoop up, so be prepared to get down to a tshirt, with leggings or similar. Bring water. Wear flat shoes you can move in easily.

Tonsley is so big and spacious no one else watches us. We might glimpse roller skaters flying past at a distance, or the unicylists belting around with the dog in the backpack, but we have our own spaces to play, and there are windows that act as mirrors and places to sit. No-one is in their offices, and no one is watching. Frankly, we look boring to the rest of the speedy movers practicing their moves...if they have even turned up.

I don't yell numbers at you or make you do things like an aerobics class. I set you up with a skill, demo it, watch you, check you, and give you time to work on it. You will do about 4 new skills in 30 minutes or so. Then you'll put them together and work on transitions. At the end of the lesson we have free play, where you practice anything you want to, or try moves with different equipment. I bring along a staff, and devil sticks, and various weirdly shaped hoops. It's good for the body to do something a bit different, and a lot of flow toy skills transfer to hula hooping..and vice versa.

Once you have attended your first session, you will be given the option of a cheaper payment method, which is available to those doing multiple classes.

Tonsley is tricky to get to for the first visit. You are aiming for Gate 1, which is on the South Road side of the complex, underneath the big 6 story lit up Flinders Uni building. For your first class, please come at 7.10 so I can guide you in if you get lost.

If you are coming from South Road from Adelaide, you need to stay well left and get on the BLACKWOOD/ TONSLEY exit, or you'll end up on the expressway. If that happens, take the exit to Flagstaff Hill ( about 1.5 k's away) and come out by McDonalds. Then do a u turn, go over the bridge, and you'll be on the correct lane for Tonsley. Keep left, and you'll get in easily.

If you have managed to avoid the expressway, straight after it is a bridge and a sign saying TONSLEY, and you have to go far over to the right lane to set up for the right turn.

If you are heading north along South Road, you should have no problems. Look for the TONSLEY sign.

If the Tonsley train is running, the station is west of your meet point, and you have to walk east up the big flight of stairs by the main carpark, and keep heading toward the hill side of the complex, and you will run into us. Last train to Adelaide is about 10.30 pm

Parking at the time of night you are there is easy. You can use the loading zones outside gate 1, or park in the big carpark to the north. It is all free, and anywhere is fine. The spaces are well lit. Security guards patrol the area incessantly, and they are friendly, and like hula hoopers. Toilets are on site, but you need a swipe card, which I have.

You will be using a lot of different sizes of hoops as you fine tune your skills and discover what suits you. My webpage

www.adelaidehulahoopers.com

has a gallery of hoops you can look at, in the most popular sizes. You can order one, once you know what you want, and I will bring it along to class.

The page will also keep you in touch with hooping events and classes, and the fb page adelaidehulahoopers does the same thing. Our insta page adelaidehulahoopers showcases moves made by students...with their permission.

I hope to see you at class soon!
