Event description
An overview of all essential payroll processes including employee on-boarding, record-keeping, superannuation, reporting, payroll and awards

About this Event

Please note: this event is run by the Small Business Development Corporation for small business owners in Western Australia only.

Employing staff is a huge responsibility. If you are new to hiring, it can be overwhelming to understand your legal obligations as an employer. Getting it wrong, even unintentionally, can cause financial and emotional stress for everyone involved.

This session takes you through an overview of all the essentials including employee on-boarding; the Australian Tax Office (ATO)'s minimum requirements relating to employee records; PAYG, Single Touch Payroll (STP) reporting - now law in Australia; superannuation reporting; options to automate payroll and reporting; the differences in paying full-time, part-time and casual staff; leave entitlements and an explanation of what an 'award' actually is.

This topic covers

  • Employee records and ATO minimum requirements;
  • Employee on-boarding checklist;
  • Understanding Single Touch Payroll (STP);
  • Best practice payroll tips;
  • Overview of superannuation and PAYG reporting, and employee entitlements;
  • Technology options to automate payroll and help keep you compliant.

This session is for anyone about to employ staff or who wants a better understanding of your obligations as an employer.

The facilitator for this topic, Bookwiz, is a multi-award winning business advisory firm that has been providing bookkeeping, BAS and payroll services for 20 years. Their presenter of this topic has extensive experience in MYOB and XERO training, franchising, change management, digital transformation consulting and financial literacy training for small business owners, and more than 25 years of experience in the financial services industry.

This session is presented by the SBDC, the only agency in the Western Australian Government dedicated to helping small business. In fact, we've been providing practical support to small business owners for more than 30 years.

Important booking information

You are limited to two tickets per booking (you can of course make more than one booking).

We will be emailing you with important information on how to find workshop locations and what you need to bring, if it is a face-to-face event. If you are attending an online workshop you will receive instructions and a link on how to join and important information to ensure your device is suitable. Therefore, if you are booking for more than one person, please ensure you provide each person's email address.

To book for larger groups, please contact us on 133 140.

You can cancel your booking up to 24 hours before the workshop starts. Even for free sessions we would appreciate you cancelling if you cannot attend so another small business owner can take your place. For paid sessions, no refunds will be issued within 24 hours of the scheduled start time.

Additional information for online workshop sessions

Please check your computer's suitability for online workshops, including its sound quality, browser, internet bandwidth and speed and video plugins (if required) before the start of the online workshop session. Camera and microphone capabilities are recommended to interact with online workshops.

Our online workshops are run as live, interactive sessions, similar to the format of our face-to-face sessions. For this reason, there is a limited number of tickets per session so our presenters can adequately interact with, and respond to, attendees. Recordings of these live sessions are not available if you do not attend the live event time.

Additional information for face-to-face workshop sessions

No, you don't need to bring your printed ticket.

We value inclusion for clients requiring disability access and our workshops are delivered in a variety of buildings and locations. If you would like further information about accessing a particular workshop please use the contact button at the end of this page to send us your query.
