Event Details

Australia’s economic development 1800 – 2010 in 10 Charts (or thereabouts)

Australia’s colonial and subsequent economic development can be described in four big themes:

  • Scale of settlement
  • Living standards
  • Industry structure
  • Openness to the international economy.

The efforts of mistrusting imperial administrators, path breaking colonial statisticians and a group of Commonwealth Statisticians and academic researchers has provided the basis for a statistical narrative of Australian economic development from 1800 to 2010 in around 10 charts (or so).  This presentation is drawn from a chapter by Butlin, Dixon and Lloyd in the forthcoming Cambridge Economic History of Australia to be published later this year.
