ESA(Vic) Professional Development Seminar 2014 #2

Dr Liam Lenten "The Lenten fix: how to stop tanking in the AFL"

The topic:

The efficacy of industry policy can be enhanced greatly by governments expediting resolution of uncertainty for the private sector. This presentation reinforces how this mechanism works empirically, via program evaluation analysis from sports, in an attempt to overcome the perennial problem of ‘tanking’. An alternative determination rule for the order of picks in reverse-order drafts (fewest games played when eliminated from finals) is considered in favour to the current standard – least number of wins. Elimination is estimated via a Monte Carlo simulation. Using AFL data from 1997-2009, results from a quasi-natural experiment show that if a team’s perverse incentive to underperform is removed prior before the end of the season, their subsequent performance rises significantly.

The speaker:

Liam is Senior Lecturer in the School of Economics at La Trobe University. He completed his PhD on exchange-rate determination models in 2005. Since, however, his research has evolved towards applied micro, predominantly sports economics (and more recently, cultural economics). Liam is a recent recipient of Faculty- and University-level Awards for both his teaching and research agendas. Liam is also a regular contributor to broadcast and print media outlets on economic matters in the sports industry, and recently advised the AFLPA on equalisation policy – he also has numerous active projects on anti-doping and other policies in sport. He has held visiting positions at: Michigan, MIT, Otago, Lancaster, Exeter and Monash. You can get a feel for his work by watching his Some Sports Economics six-part video series at:http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7B0B86161BD7B439
