Event description
Pony Express invite you to join The Epoch Wars Working Group at the Brunswick Mechanics Institute as part of Asia TOPA.

About this Event

In March of the year 2020, the 36th International Geological Congress (IGC) will host a gathering of experts to discuss the possibility of naming Earth’s next era “The Anthropocene”. The Anthropocene Working Group, a coalition of 34 scientists, are making the case that our current multi-millennial epoch should be named for the impact of human beings on the stone foundations of Earth's strata.

The name of Earth's next epoch could have deep ramifications for the next 10,000 years. Pony Express refuse to leave this monumental decision in the hands of a privileged few. To coincide with the 36th IGC, they are convening The Epoch Wars Working Group at the Brunswick Mechanics Institute as part of Asia TOPA. This event is an alternative congress, wherein audiences become delegates negotiating the urgent task of naming Earth’s next chapter. What is the right way to name the future, according to the masses destined to die in it?

Epoch Wars is a multi-stage project aimed at de-stablising the word “Anthropocene” through context-specific artistic interventions. The Epoch Wars Working Group is an experimental showing, created specifically for AsiaTOPA and supported by the Australia Council for the Arts. Epoch Wars has been developed with support from CultureLAB through Arts House.

This work-in-progress showing will be presented in English and Mandarin.
