Description

Air-pollution is a global environmental health issue contributing significantly to the global burden of disease. The World Health Organisation (WHO) lists air pollution of one of the most significant risk factors that can be reduced by actions by individuals, governments and industry. On a world scale, Melbourne and Victoria’s air quality is considered good, however action needs to be taken to ensure that Victoria’s air quality is maintained, improved in some specific locations and doesn’t decline.

As Victoria’s environmental regulator, EPA Victoria issues licences to control certain industrial emissions and monitors for breaches of air pollutant standards. EPA Victoria also actively seeks to inform the community and industry on ways in which pollutants can be reduced, such as improving the efficiency of wood heaters and car engine maintenance as well as providing input into land use planning decisions. EPA also works with key industry sectors to reduce the impact of air pollution.

On 3 October EPA Victoria has the pleasure to introduce a presentation by internationally renowned air quality researcher and speaker Professor Mark J Nieuwenhuijsen who will provide his insights into the link between air quality and health and what practical interventions can be implemented to improve air quality. Prof Nieuwenhuijsen’s presentation will also include a snap shot of current research findings of European Study of Cohorts for Air Pollution Effects project.

Prof Nieuwenhuijsen will also discuss impact of urban green interface on public health and including research outcomes and practical interventions recommended by the World Health Organisations (WHO) Urban Spaces and Health: A review of evidence report with discussion on how the recommendations can be implemented where relevant in Melbourne.

If you can’t make it in person, this event will also be LiveStreamed.
