Description

This short course is for legal practitioners and other professionals interested in the environmental protection regulatory framework in Western Australia, in its national and international contexts.


The course will explore six themes:

  1. Key definitions, institutions and objectives of Environmental Protection Law;
  2. The policy instruments and information tools that underpin environmental protection;
  3. Regulatory controls on particular activities causing pollution and environmental harm;
  4. Environmental Impact Assessment at the State and Federal level;
  5. Criminal liabilities under the WA and Federal legislation; and
  6. Civil liabilities under the WA and Federal legislation and at common law.

In the COVID-19 circumstances, the course will be conducted entirely on-line over the period 18 – 29 May. Reading materials and pre-recorded lectures will be available from 18 May and a series of interactive on-line 90 minutes sessions with expert guest contributors will be conducted via zoom in the mornings and afternoons of 25, 26, 28 and 29 May.

Continuing Professional Development Points (CPD)
Full attendance entitles a legal practitioner to claim six CPD points, selected from Competency Area 2 (Professional Skills), Competency Area 3 (Ethics and Professional Responsibility) and Competency Area 4 (Substantive Law).
