Description

About the workshop

Mended garments carry a story of care: they are a triumph of imperfection over pretention. When we embrace repair as a valid and useful act, we extend the life of garments while enriching our own.

In this workshop you’ll work with Jane to become a ‘mender’. Menders actively and visibly embrace post-materialism. They darn socks, repair tears, stitch over stains, mend munches and patch holes. The results are quirky, unique and entirely wearable.

This workshop you’ll work with Jane to revive your unwanted clothes and make them wearable again. She’ll supply needles, basic threads, patches and problem-solving ideas to give them a new lease on life.

What you’ll get:

  • All materials required provided
  • A personalised piece of woven body adornment
  • Afternoon tea and refreshments

What to bring:

  • Any unwanted clothes that need reviving, be it hole to fix or something that needs embellishing

About Jane Milburn

Jane Milburn’s creative practice is grounded in natural fibres and reuse of existing resources. While Jane has always been a maker, she began upcycling in 2011 after observing fashion waste and set up Textile Beat in 2013 to share creative experiences that expand traditional thinking about what we wear. As the author of Slow Clothing, Jane believes we all can live lightly on Earth through the everyday practice of wearing and caring for clothes. Through experimentation and self-innovation, Jane enables others to explore creative upcycling using hand-stitching techniques to make, mend, adapt, refashion and repurpose garments already in circulation. www.textilebeat.com.
