About this Event

Dates: November 14th and 15th (Saturday and Sunday)

Time: Saturday (9 am – 2 pm) and Sunday (9 am – 4 pm)

Cost: $230 Non-Members | $220 current NPW Members

Enquiries: chris.j.clifton@outlook.com

Venue: Mt. Sugarloaf and Newcastle Printmakers Workshop, 27 Popran Road, Adamstown

This 2-day workshop will focus on sugar lift etching on aluminium plates from an en plein air experience at Mt Sugarloaf. Students will learn how to make and apply a sugar lift solution to create hand-drawn and graphic prints of the glorious tracks and vegetation at Mt Sugarloaf. It will also be an opportunity for previous attendees of both the sugar and soap etching workshop and en plein air Merewether to push themselves further and develop their skills and techniques.

Day 1 of the workshop will involve participants being out in the field where they will be able to produce graphic drawings on prepared aluminium plate. Drawings will be created using a sugar lift solution. Students will be encouraged to immerse themselves in the environment, gathering as much inspiration and drawings as possible to help build on their print on day 2.

Day 2 of the workshop will see participants etch their plates they worked on out in the field and produce prints of their En Plein Air works. Students will also be able to further develop their prints based on drawings, materials and photographs collected in the field.

All supplies are provided for you to make a series of prints. However, it is encouraged that you also bring further smaller aluminium plates if you want to create more than two plates. Previous experience in intaglio techniques is preferable, but not essential. Experienced and beginning printmakers will benefit from this workshop.

Materials Fee: $20 per person

What students need to bring: pencils, pens, drawing paper; an easel if you prefer to work that way; sun protection; lunch, snacks and a drink.

Covid Safety: Due to NPW’s Covid Policy - this workshop is limited to 7 participants to ensure we comply with social distancing. The workshop will be sanitised prior to, during, and after the class. You are expected to bring your own disposable gloves to this workshop and follow the guidelines to ensure safety of other participants.

ABOUT THE TUTOR

Chris Clifton is a printmaker and photographer based here in Newcastle. He has completed Advanced Printmaking and Drawing courses at Newcastle Art School as well as a Diploma in Visual Arts (Printmaking and Photography). He has taught at high schools for a number of years and is currently balancing being a stay-at-home dad, Masters student and artist. Chris likes to combine a range of print and non-print mediums in order to explore human-nature relationships, critical theories and the illusive ‘boundaries’ we like to create between ourselves, others and the environment.
